    Mircea Pauca (Saturday, 12 September 2020 21:17)

Mircea Pauca (Allies, bid 2.0) tied Jim Bodenheimer (Axis). After a roller-coaster of un/luck, Allies ended all 8 turns with exactly 2 raw POC which matched the bid. We have played before for AREA.

T1: "My" Barents-in-1, both battlecruisers reach it so Germans mass all 7 ships and 3 U to North Atlantic, where Rodney awaits with 3 other battleships. Germans end in control, Royal Sovereign and Adm. Scheer are sunk. Scharnhorst gets oiled and threatens anywhere! Both sides' land-based air score one sinking (Repulse, Pola) and one damaged ship (Hood -3, Lutzow -1). Axis gains 2 PoC (raw).

T2: With 2 fast ships down (Hood had to repair) I mass everything fast, including 2 carriers to Barents. All 3 battleships reach it so it's well deterrent. Germans stay home and repair Lutzow. Allies gain back 1 PoC, total 1 Axis raw.

T3: The Allied blockade is well deterrent but 4 U dare to strike Convoy1A in N.Atl escorted by 2 carriers (9 ASW). 2U sunk, 3U disabled, Allies remain in control. Luftwaffe damages Hood again but now has a close base at Murmansk. Allies gain back 1 PoC, total 0 raw.

T4: Allied blockade is uncontested again but Luftwaffe strikes and disables Convoy1A, it turns back to America! Allies gain 1 PoC, total 1 Allied raw.

T5: The 6U stretch ASW defenses so I let existing surface ships, no carrier to escort Convoy 2B in Barents. The Kriegsmarine, slightly inferior (98:105 in my Control Points) dares to attack, it won't get any easier! It results a lopsided disaster. First, the Luftwaffe from Norway disables 3 battleships! Allies lose 3BB, 2CA and the Convoy vs Gneisenau sunk and 3 other damaged Germans. 6U attack Convoy1A in NAtl (14 ASW). Only 1U is sunk but all 4 surviving U-boats miss! RAF also sinks Pola in Taranto. Axis gains 2 PoC, total 1 Axis raw.

T6: Everything needs to get perfect for Allies to get back - and they do! Allies scramble every fast ship back to Barents, none misses so they are barely deterrent (83:82). Germans choose to stay and repair. North Atlantic see the full 7U wolfpack try again at Convoy 3C (14 ASW), they lose 3U and miss. Control score is tied but Allies gain 3 PoC for unloading Convoy1A to Russia. Total 2 Allied raw.

T7: Luftwaffe tries to turn back Convoy3C from Barents but only disables Ark Royal. Italians (2 cruisers +5 U) contest S.Atlantic , they lose 1U and Gorizia but U-boats sink Royal Oak. Fiume shelters back to Uruguay. Allies gain 3 PoC for Convoy3C, total 5 Allied raw. [Can they keep the advance?]

T8: Finally a Russian is ready enough to sail, so U-boats split and successfully uncontrol Baltic and S.Atl. Germans have their last chance to sortie valiantly in the North Sea (9 various ships vs 8BB, 1CA, scores 80:87). Graf Zeppelin's airstrike disables Nelson and scratches Rodney while Courageous misses. Then Graf Zeppelin heroically enters the gun battle and is sunk herself along with Graf Spee. The German gunfire is devastating (3BB sunk, 3 disabled) and Queen Elizabeth makes a doomed last stand vs Tirpitz and 5 smaller ships. Axis gain back 3 PoC, total 2 Allied raw or 0 net.

Thanks to Jim Bodenheimer for the fair play and fierce fighting spirit!

James Kramer Jr. (Wednesday, 16 September 2020 18:10)

A quick review of game #3 Jim Kramer (allies - bid 1.5) VS Bob Jamelli (axis).

T1-3: Playing my usual Barents in 2 the axis forge a +6 lead by the end of T3. Barents combat on T2 and T3 were won by the axis. Losses: Allies - Ark Royal, Eagle, KGV, DOY, Repulse, Renown, 3 CA. Axis - Tirpitz, Graf Spee, Lutzow, Blucher, 2 subs. Also 2 Italian CA and an old BB were sunk on T3 by LBA. Convoy 1A did not sail on T3. Both Soviet BB sail on T3 but subs disable both.

T4: Deployment sees Convoy 1A sail, no Soviets. Of note Valiant and Warspite make speed to the Barents. Axis keep German fleet in Baltic with Bismarck and Gneisenau repairing. Axis challenge SA 2 BB and a CA with 5 subs and 2 Italian CA. Combat sees no allied losses but a sub and both Italian CA are sunk. Score still +6 axis.

T5: Convoy 1A to Barents, 2B in NA. US sees 2 BB and 2 CA come on, no Soviets. Germans stay in the Baltic except 5 subs/LBA in Barents and a sub VS 2 BB in the SA. ASW is devastating with 5 subs sunk and 1 disabled.
Allies only lose POW. With convoy 1A thru to Russia the allies gain 4 POC. Game score now +2 axis.

T6: Convoy 2B to Barents, 3C sails. Another US CA arrives but again no Soviets. The Germans stay in the Baltic, 4 subs to the SA VS 2 BB and LBA in Barents. Combat sees allied LBA sink an old Italian BB with the axis LBA sinking convoy 2B. This loss forces convoy 3C to move to the Barents. Game score stays at +2 axis.

T7: Again, convoy 3C to the Barents, no more US or Soviets deployed. Germans send 5 subs to SA facing 3 BB, a CA and a CV. In the Barents allies defend 3C with Hood, Anson, Howe, Valiant, Warspite, 3 CA and a CV. The Germans send all surface units (BB, 2 BC, PB, 2 CA, CV) to attack them, Baltic empty. In combat the subs sink the CV but the allies win the Barents. Losses: allies - Hood, Anson, Howe, Warspite, Courageous, axis - Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Admiral Scheer. Of note Bismarck was disabled with 6 damage. Convoy 3C in to Russia gives the allies 4 POC for the turn and moves the game score to +2 allies.

T8: A Soviet BB sails forcing 2 subs to negate it. The allies deploy to counter subs in NA and SA (6 ASW each), NS has 6 BB and a CV. Sailing 3 4-4-4 to the Barents sees one succeed joining a 4-4-4, 5 CA and a CV.
Confrontations: NA - Allies have 6 surface ships facing 4 subs. Barents - Axis send the damaged Bismarck with 2 CA, the CV and LBA. The subs decontrol the NA. Airstrikes in the Barents see an allied CA disabled. Barents combat goes to the allies with 3 disables in the first combat round. The allies pick up another POC to take the game score to +3 allies. The bid adjusted the score to a +1.5 allied win.

An good game for my Barents in 2 play. The sinking of convoy 2B gave me some nervous minutes and I count myself very lucky for the T5 sub force elimination. Winning the Barents battle on T7 put events back in my favor making T8 manageable. Still on T8 lucky axis airstrikes could have changed everything. Fortunately for me they did not.
